Gardner Dozois passed away today in Pennsylvania after being hospitalized for an infection. He edited some of my favorite anthologies, especially the Year’s Best Science Fiction series. I never had the opportunity to meet him, sadly, but from everything I’ve heard from people who did know him, I think we would have gotten along quite well. Everyone describes him as a friendly, fun guy to be around.
Here’s a short list of some of his best work:
- The Year’s Best Science Fiction 1-35 (the 35th volume comes out in July)
- Asimov’s Science Fiction magazine (1986-2004)
- Dangerous Women anthology (includes “Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell”—one of my favorite Cosmere stories—by Brandon Sanderson)
- Aliens Among Us anthology
- Gardnerspace (series of reviews of short fiction)
- Warriors anthologies (with George R.R. Martin)
- The New Space Opera anthology series (sadly, only two volumes)
- Exclamatory Series (all the titles had exclamation points in them, and covered a wide variety of topics)
There are many others, too, including over 50 short stories. I encourage everyone to go and look up his works. He was an excellent editor, and a great writer. Here’s to you, Gardner! Thank you for bringing so many great stories to my attention.
