Twilight Tales call for submissions is live!

Posted on June 5, 2019 - June 5, 2019 by Joe

The third LTUE Benefit Anthology, a light horror collection titled Twilight Tales, is open for submissions! This volume is in honor of Betty Pope, a former librarian at Brigham Young University who established the science fiction and fantasy literature Special Collection section at the library. She also hosted a reception at her home each year after LTUE for the guests and committee. This anthology will contain stories Betty would have loved.

In summary:

  • Light horror stories (think Twilight Zone or Goosebumps) any length up to 17,500 words
  • Unpublished or reprint stories
  • Up to two submissions per author
  • This is a benefit/charity anthology, so stories are donated and author receives no monetary compensation
  • Authors receive a print copy of the anthology and an electronic copy
  • Meet the content guidelines described on the Submission Guidelines page
  • Stories are due by August 15, 2019

You can read the full call for submissions on the Hemelein Publications site.

Call for submissions closed for A Dragon and Her Girl

Posted on December 19, 2018 - December 19, 2018 by Joe

You can read more about it over on the Hemelein Publications site. Now, to buckle down and read all of the submissions with Jaleta Clegg. We have to have decisions made by the end of January 2019. Wish us luck! I think it’s going to be hard based on the caliber of those who submitted stories.

Graduation

Posted on July 23, 2018 - July 21, 2018 by Joe

I’m officially done with school. While they have a few administrative things to finish before they give me my diploma, I’m done. It’s been interesting and frustrating (especially those business finance and accounting classes), but it was good to go through the process to make everything official.

So, on to focusing on writing and editing!

There are exciting announcements coming over the next few months. I wish I could say more, but I’ll at least leave you with some hints:

  • At least one new anthology will open for submissions.
  • A release date will be announced.
  • I’ll be free from school.

Stay tuned for more!

Gardner Dozois, 1947-2018

Posted on May 27, 2018 - July 5, 2018 by Joe

Gardner Dozois (image by Elf on Wikimedia Commons)

Gardner Dozois passed away today in Pennsylvania after being hospitalized for an infection. He edited some of my favorite anthologies, especially the Year’s Best Science Fiction series. I never had the opportunity to meet him, sadly, but from everything I’ve heard from people who did know him, I think we would have gotten along quite well. Everyone describes him as a friendly, fun guy to be around.

Here’s a short list of some of his best work:

  • The Year’s Best Science Fiction 1-35 (the 35th volume comes out in July)
  • Asimov’s Science Fiction magazine (1986-2004)
  • Dangerous Women anthology (includes “Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell”—one of my favorite Cosmere stories—by Brandon Sanderson)
  • Aliens Among Us anthology
  • Gardnerspace (series of reviews of short fiction)
  • Warriors anthologies (with George R.R. Martin)
  • The New Space Opera anthology series (sadly, only two volumes)
  • Exclamatory Series (all the titles had exclamation points in them, and covered a wide variety of topics)

There are many others, too, including over 50 short stories. I encourage everyone to go and look up his works. He was an excellent editor, and a great writer. Here’s to you, Gardner! Thank you for bringing so many great stories to my attention.
