Gardner Dozois passed away today in Pennsylvania after being hospitalized for an infection. He edited some of my favorite anthologies, especially the Year’s Best Science Fiction series. I never had the opportunity to meet him, sadly, but from everything I’ve heard from people who did know him, I think we would have gotten along quite well. Everyone describes him as a friendly, fun guy to be around.
Here’s a short list of some of his best work:
The Year’s Best Science Fiction 1-35 (the 35th volume comes out in July)
Asimov’s Science Fiction magazine (1986-2004)
Dangerous Women anthology (includes “Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell”—one of my favorite Cosmere stories—by Brandon Sanderson)
Aliens Among Us anthology
Gardnerspace (series of reviews of short fiction)
Warriors anthologies (with George R.R. Martin)
The New Space Opera anthology series (sadly, only two volumes)
Exclamatory Series (all the titles had exclamation points in them, and covered a wide variety of topics)
There are many others, too, including over 50 short stories. I encourage everyone to go and look up his works. He was an excellent editor, and a great writer. Here’s to you, Gardner! Thank you for bringing so many great stories to my attention.
Submissions have been closed for the Trace the Stars benefit anthology I am co-editing with Jaleta Clegg. You can read the announcement about it here or here. There will be an official release party in February 2019 at Life, the Universe, & Everything. I’ll post the details of location, date, and time as soon as I have them.
Just to refresh your memory, here’s the not-yet-final cover:
Just under the wire, I got “Napoleon’s Tallest Teamster” through its final edit and submitted to Immortal Works’Mormon steampunk anthology. This was unlike any story I had even contemplated writing in the past, so it made me stretch and learn a lot as a writer. It had four major versions before the final story came through, and I think its a solid one.
Now it’s up to the anthology editors to decide if it is what they want. Fingers crossed!
For those of you who don’t know, I’m co-editing Trace the Stars, a hard science fiction and space opera benefit anthology. We’ve added a couple new authors, and there are only (maybe) two spots left, so if you want to submit a story, please do so soon (see the call for submissions for details). The new authors have been bolded in the list below. We are already at about 92,000 words, so this is pretty close to the final roster:
