LTUE Day 1, Kickstarter begins

Posted on February 16, 2023 - February 15, 2023 by Joe

Today is the first day of Life, the Universe, & Everything 41, the annual science fiction and fantasy symposium (think “more academic than most cons”) in Provo, Utah. I’m on a number of different panels, if you’d like to come and see (title, time, location; * indicates I’m the moderator)):

  • “Advanced Topics: Crafting the Ideal Elevator Pitch for Your Story” * (Thu, Feb 16 at 10am, Elm)
  • “Chinese, Japanese, and Korean Legends and Folktales” (Thu at 6pm, Zion)
  • “A Hero of a Different Stripe – LTUE Anthology Release” (Fri, Feb 17 at 11am, Juniper)
  • “All the Monoliths in the Universe Release” (Fri at Noon, Maple)
  • “Different Types of Editing” (Fri at 1pm, Bryce)
  • “Pitch Sessions for Authors and Illustrators” * (Fri at 5pm, Cedar)
  • “Mass Book Signing” (Fri at 7-9pm, Zion)
  • “” ()
  • “” ()
  • “” ()
  • “” ()

Outside of those times, I’ll generally be at the Hemelein Publications table near the South Tower elevators, so drop by and say hello, pick up a book or two, and hang out!

Additionally, the Kickstarter for The Horror at Pooh Corner, a Lovecraftian Winnie-the-Pooh anthology I’m editing, starts at about 9:00 am Mountain Time today, so check that out. I’m working with many amazing authors and artists to put this together, and we’d appreciate your support!

The Horror at Pooh Corner

Posted on February 15, 2023 - April 12, 2023 by Joe

You may not have known about it, but the day we’ve all been waiting for is almost here! The Kickstarter for The Horror at Pooh Corner begins tomorrow, Thursday, February 16, at about 9:00am Mountain Time.

I really want this project to be successful because it will allow Hemelein to do more pro-pay projects in the future. I’ve received so much for the writing community through working with all of you on all my past projects, as well as reading so many stories by you. This means that the more people who back the project, especially in the first 24 hours, the more likely it is to succeed and build organic buzz about the project.

Will you help it get off to an amazing start by sharing this information with your friends, family, and anyone else you think might be interested? I’ve attached an image you can use to help promote it. I’ve also included some text (below) that you can use when promoting it.

Here’s the text you can use:

The Hundred Acre Wood has been part of the consciousness of the world for a very long time. For most of the history of the world, it existed on the fringes of awareness, just there, in the corner of your eye. In the early days of the Twentieth Century, a well-meaning fellow by the name of Alan Milne recorded some of the adventures of the denizens of that fell place, though he did brighten the real stories a bit in order to appeal to the children of the day. Now, the real stories can be told.

The dark truth of heffalumps and woozles, what the bees are really hiding, what happened to all the adults, the story behind Pooh’s obsession with hunny, what caused Eeyore’s gloomy outlook, why Piglet is horribly afraid all the time, why Kanga and Roo really came to the Hundred Acre Wood, what Pooh and Christopher Robin discovered at the North Pole, why Eeyore’s tail must be kept attached, the significance of red birthday balloons, what caused the great flooding of the Wood, the true purpose for Pooh poetry compositions, the story of Owl’s Uncle Robert, and more. These are the kinds of stories you can expect in The Horror at Pooh Corner anthology.

These are stories terrifying and humorous (sometimes both). The veil between insanity and the Hundred Acre Wood is thin, and cosmic horrors and other fell beings frequently cross over. Find here the true stories of how these encounters affect the denizens of the Hundred Acre Wood.

I’m looking forward to continuing to work with all of you in the future, and thank you very much for sharing this information far and wide!

Blog post on AML site

Posted on April 8, 2022 - April 7, 2022 by Joe

I had the opportunity to write a guest post on the website of the Association for Mormon Letters. I discussed the inspiration for and plans of Hemelein Publications, including the new Legacy of the Corridor publication series. This series highlights well known and lesser known authors from the Intermountain West, and the third volume comes out on April 19: Down the Arches of the Years by Lee Allred. I really enjoyed editing it, and I think you’ll like it.

Update for Summer 2021

Posted on July 30, 2021 - July 30, 2021 by Joe

I have several announcements to make:

A Universe of Stories was released on June 30, 2021. The official release event is on August 14 at American Fork Library at 11am. Come out, pick up your copy, and get signatures from the authors and the editor.

The Florilegium of Madness, a collection of short fiction and essays by D. J. Butler and co-edited by Callie Butler and myself, was released on July 28! It has a bunch of Hiram Woolley stories (The Cunning Man), as well as a bunch of other Cthulhu mythos and other dark fantasy stories. I enjoyed working with Dave and Callie to create this volume. This is the first collection of Dave’s stories, and the first in the Legacy of the Corridor publication series from Hemelein Publications. We’re still working on a release event for it.

We have a cover for Parliament of Wizards! This is the fourth volume in the LTUE Benefit Anthologies series that I co-edit with Jaleta Clegg. It comes out in February 2022.

I plan to be at FanX, too. Check out my schedule for more details.
